Historical Notes on Evensong
Choral Evensong is one of the oldest and most revered traditions of Anglican Christianity. Archbishop Thomas Cranmer created the service for the first Book of Common Prayer in 1549 by combining the monastic evening offices of Vespers and Compline. Today, it stands as a jewel of the Anglican choral tradition and a treasure among Christian liturgies.
During Evensong, most of the service is sung by the choir on behalf of the congregation. This allows attendees to engage with the service in a personal and reflective manner, with no active participation required. It's an opportunity to let the serene music and profound words wash over you, providing a moment of peace and spiritual reflection.
We invite you to experience this timeless tradition with us. Thank you for worshipping with us at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral.
