Dean's Message for June 5, 2025

Back in the day, each heard in their own language—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt, Libya and Rome, Cretans and Arabs.

This Sunday, the Day of Pentecost, this passage from the Acts of the Apostles will be read in English, German, Russian, American Sign Language, French, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish and Latin.

How often barriers to communication go up, and how wonderful is this story of the Holy Spirit giving each the ability to speak to and understand one another!

I love the question they asked: "What does this mean?" Let us devote this season of Pentecost to contemplating this question, and to welcoming the Holy Spirit filling our hearts, minds and mouths with new abilities.

"I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams."

The Very Rev'd Katie Churchwell, 15th Dean, St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral
