Dean's Message for August 13, 2026

Beloveds,

For many families, this week marks the beginning of a new school year. Some students headed back to classrooms today, while others will begin in the days ahead. Whether you're packing backpacks, moving into a college residence hall, beginning a new job in education, or simply adjusting to a different rhythm, this season reminds us that God is always inviting us into new beginnings.

As Christians, we know that new beginnings aren't reserved for January or the first day of school. They are woven throughout our life of faith. Every Sunday, every prayer, every act of service, every gathering around Word and Sacrament offers us the opportunity to begin again—to be renewed by God's grace and sent back into the world to love and serve.

Here at St. Paul's, we're entering one of those exciting seasons. Over the next few weeks, we'll gather in ways both joyful and meaningful. Join us this Sunday afternoon, August 16, for our Annual Cathedral Pool Party at the Stanford family home. (And yes—it's for adults, too!) These moments of fellowship are every bit as important as our worship and formation, helping us build the relationships that strengthen our life together.

We're also looking ahead to Oakerhater Sunday on August 30, one of our Cathedral's most meaningful annual celebrations, and to Rally Day on September 13 as we officially welcome everyone home for a new program year. The following Sunday, September 20, Christian Formation for all ages resumes, and I couldn't be more excited about what lies ahead. Our staff, clergy, and volunteers have been working diligently behind the scenes, and I truly believe God has wonderful things in store for St. Paul's in the coming year.

As summer gently gives way to fall, I hope you'll make room—for worship, for learning, for friendship, and for the quiet ways God continues to form us into the people He calls us to be.

If you're returning after a busy summer, welcome home. If you're new to St. Paul's, we're so glad you're here. There is a place for you in this community, and I look forward to sharing this next season of ministry together.

Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
