A Note from the Dean about Safe Church Renewals

Beloveds,
One of the gifts of life together at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral is the trust we share with one another. Each time we gather for worship, formation, service, or fellowship, we are entrusted with the care of one another—especially the most vulnerable and beloved among us.
Across the Episcopal Church, in our Diocese, and here at Saint Paul’s, we honor that trust through Safe Church standards and training, which help ensure that our congregations and ministries remain places of safety, dignity, and care for all.
You may soon hear from—or may already have heard from—Ashley Ozan, who serves on our staff as the Cathedral’s Safe Church Administrator. Ashley is helping us renew and update Safe Church certifications for those serving in ministry or leadership roles.
Some of you may remember this training from years ago, when it was known as “Safeguarding God’s Children,” under Praesidium Academy. Today, the Episcopal Church uses the broader Safe Church framework, and these certifications must be renewed periodically so we remain in alignment with Episcopal Church standards and insurance requirements. For some roles, this may also include signing a keyholder agreement or related forms.
I want to say clearly that this process is not about suspicion or the assumption that something is wrong. Rather, it reflects our shared commitment to be proactive and faithful stewards of the community entrusted to us. These practices help ensure that everyone who participates in the life of the Cathedral can do so in a safe and welcoming environment.
If Ashley reaches out regarding a renewal or form, I would be grateful for your prompt response. Your partnership helps us care well for one another and for all who come through our doors. I am so proud, as your dean, of your partnership in maintaining our high standards and keeping everyone safe.
If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to Ashley or to me directly.
Thank you for the many ways you continue to serve the life and ministry of Saint Paul’s
The Very Reverend Katie Churchwell
